A facelift can improve the most visible
signs of aging by removing excess fat, tightening underlying
muscles, and redrape the skin of your face and neck. A facelift
can be done together with other procedures such as brow and
forehead lifts, eyelid surgery, facial liposuction, chin augmentation
and nose surgery.
Surgical Procedure
Procedure Incisions usually begin above
the hairline at the temples, follow the natural line in front
of the ear, and curve behind the earlobe into the crease behind
the ear, and into or along the lower scalp so as the results
make scars nearly invisible. The exact placement of incisions
and the sequence of events is depended on your facial structure.
In general, the surgeon separates the skin from the fat and
muscle below. Fat may be trimmed or suctioned from around
the neck and chin to improve the contour. The surgeon then
tightens the underlying muscle and membrane, pulls the skin
back, and removes the excess. Stitches secure the layers of
tissue and close the incisions. In full face lift the neck
and face will be tightened altogether.
Results
After surgery there isn't usually significant
discomfort; if there is, it can be reduced with the prescribed
pain medicine by your surgeon. (Severe or persistent pain
or a sudden swelling of your face should be reported to your
surgeon immediately.) Feeling numb on the skin is quite normal
and it will disappear in a few weeks or months.
Possible Risks
Possible risks can be a collection of blood
under the skin, an injury to the nerves that control facial
muscles (usually temporary), infection, or reactions to the
anesthesia. Poor healing of the skin is most likely to affect
smokers. Most of the incision is concealed and not noticeable.
It is most likely to be heavy behind the ear where tension
is stronger.
Side Effects
The severity and duration of such side effects
may vary, especially if another cosmetic procedure was performed
at the same time.
After Care
Following surgery, a small thin tube may
be temporarily placed under the skin behind your ear to drain
any blood that might collect there. The surgeon may also wrap
your head loosely in bandages to minimize bruising and swelling.
All will be removed the next day and hair shampoo to soften
the hair.
Recovery Period
The recovery takes one to two weeks.
Post Operative Care
It is important for you to avoid strenuous
activity, including sex and heavy housework, for at least
two weeks (walking and mild stretching are fine); avoid alcohol,
steam bath, and sauna for several months in order to avoid
tension on the wound, which could lead to worse scarring.
Bandages will be removed after one to five days.
There might be an obvious bruise, and puffy face but it will
be normal in a few weeks.
Most of the stitches will be removed after
five days. The scalp may take longer to heal, and the stitches
or metal clips in your hairline could be left in a few days
later.
